sarah kim has left me

welcome to wednesday, september 18th.

today, my good friend Sarah Kim left for the states
#uchicago #damnnn
and she wanted a dedication post
so yea,
"Sarah Kim Has Left Me"

btw,
this sculpture? installation?
is one i found in front of the Seoul Museum of Art
(SeMa, for short)
pretty great, huh

walking up to where the museum ~
i love how they have a 'nature walk'
leading up to the museum
and how they have sculpture placed along the way
this one was part of many sculptures placed in the woods
titled, "Thinking"

Voyage into the Myth: Gauguin, and after
@Seoul Museum of Art

wootwoot ~
Gauguin exhibit !!
apparently it's the first time ever that his three most famous works,
"The Yellow Christ" (1889),
"Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?" (1897),
and "Vision After the Sermon" (1888),
have been brought to a single location,
making it a must-see exhibit

i've been wanting to come see this for ages
!!!

i bought some postcards after the exhibit
this one is of Gauguin's possibly most famous piece:
"Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?" (1897)

if i had had enough money,
i was willing to buy a color print poster of this
buuuuut
i didn't have 45,000won on me, soyea.
#regrets

the piece itself was 4 meters long,
a grand canvas that took up a whole wall in the exhibition room

from right to left,
from birth to death,
Gauguin painted the struggle in living,
with himself portrayed as his dog (on the right)
seeming somewhat naïve and unaware of what is to come.

the SeMA's exhibits always have feature artists towards the end of the exhibits

i loved this feature of Korean artists Youngsun Lim
these two pieces are part of her project: "Mandala (emptiness)

each piece was actually more than twice my height (i'm 5'11'')
and was painted with extreme detail

if you look into the child's eyes,
you can see a man in uniform holding a gun against two scared women
representing Chinese oppression in Tibet

i think i stared at this piece for at least a good 10 minutes
and considering i stayed at
"Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?" (1897)
for about 15 minutes, that's pretty impressive HAHA

the other feature artist i found interesting was Marco Brambilla
i don't have any photos (or postcards) to show you
but basically, Brambilla creates massive panoramic video presentations
usually a giant montage of clips from movies and tv,
played on repeat or in slow motion,
creating a grand landscape, usually of a fantastic nature,
accompanied with a powerful orchestral tune.

"Evolution (megaplex)" was playing in a room with 3D glasses
it had clips from many famous movies
( the only one i can remember is the "finger scene" from E.T.)

here is his work, "Civilization"
similar to what i saw today,
but Evolution was more sci-fi and space-oriented
while Civilization feels more like a fantasy dreamland
just my opinion though.
#iloveit

done with the exhibit !!
time to go walk around the Deoksu-gung palace

lol at the woman who ducked when i took this photo
huehuehue you're still in it huehuehuehue

btw, since August 2013,
anyone under the age of 24 gets free admission !!
it's a great place to walk and relax ~

chosun x renaissance

at the small café in the corner of the palace grounds,
i found that they were selling old Korean stamps !!

i remember seeing a collection of stamps at my grandfather's
and i wanted a set for myself c:
since they weren't too expensive i bought myself a pack

im so vintage amiright?

after-walk refreshments ~

DemiSoda Lemon _ 700won

here is m stamp set !!

Korean Modern Art Series (stamps) _ 5,000won

before i go,
i wanted to share a recent obsession of mine
"Folktronica"
the lovechild of folk and electronica,
if you hadn't caught on that

here's a piece i felt fitting to today's exhibition,
"Unwise" by Lapland
i love how this is both folktronica and somewhat ambient too
it's great, yes.

that's all.

bibi

ps. Sarah, i hope you had a safe flight to Chicago !!
i'm going to miss you tons
but you're probably going to send me links to youtube videos of musicals regularly
so it ain't all that bad, right?
i'll see you in december !
have fun ~
